Quilling: A New Way to Look at Paper

In these days of complete digital media immersion, there seems to be a resurgence in hand-made elements used in graphic design. Quilling is just one of those elements. If you’ve never heard of it, quilling (also known as Paper Filigree) is a form of paper art. It involves coiling strips of paper into various shapes and then gluing them together to create intricate artwork. This is not your grandma’s scrap-booking technique. Or maybe it is, if your grandma is crazy-talented.
Perhaps the most well-known quiller today is Yulia Brodskaya. Her work ranges from dynamic paper illustrations to whimsical typography treatments. If it looks familiar, her work has graced a variety of magazine covers and print advertisements.
Another quilling project getting some attention is Lisa Nilsson‘s “Tissue Series” – a set of anatomical cross sections. The interior of the human body has never been so pretty.
